Transforming a Historic Theater into a Community and Experience Center

Join us for a tour of the new Rivian Community Center, an adaptive reuse of the historic Laguna Beach Theater.

Constructed in 1934, the historic Laguna Beach Theater has been transformed into a local community and experience center owned by automaker, Rivian.  Attendees will learn about the complexity of the project working with three codes – California Historic, Cal Green, and ADA accessibility, as well as health and safety upgrades for its occupants, while respecting this historic city landmark.

 


Learning Objectives:

  • Learning Objective 1:
    Attendees will learn how to create an adaptive reuse project that provides health benefits for its occupants as required by the Cal Green codes, while also working within California’s strict historic codes.

  • Learning Objective 2:
    Attendees will learn about code required seismic upgrades for a safe environment for its occupants, while also respecting the integrity of the historic building.

  • Learning Objective 3:
    Attendees will learn about California Building Code required ADA accessibility upgrades for the safety of its users while also complying with California’s historic codes.

  • Learning Objective 4:
    Attendees will learn how the project team resolved water intrusion issues to create a healthy environment for its occupants, while also respecting the architectural significance of this city landmark building.
