Mentoring / IDP
Because design is a collaborative process, we all benefit by sharing our knowledge
and experience with one another. This need to share experience is, of course,
especially true with those who are just “starting out” in the profession.
The California Architects Board (CAB) requires that, prior to licensure, candidates
complete a structured internship program called Comprehensive Intern Development
Program (CIDP). The CIDP requirements are fulfilled in conjunction with the
Intern Development Program (IDP) of the National Council of Architectural Registration
Boards (NCARB) which is administered nation-wide.
CIDP/IDP program guidelines,
including a Mentor Training Booklet are available at the AIAOC office. Complete
information is also available at the CAB website
at www.cab.ca.gov and
at the NCARB website at www.ncarb.org/idp.
How can you
get involved?
Volunteer to be a mentor or become the “point of contact” within
your firm for the CIDP/IDP Program. Your role in being a mentor need not be
time consuming. A monthly lunchtime meeting will probably suffice. The mentor’s
role is simply to provide guidance to enhance the intern’s professional
growth and to review their progress in completing the CIDP/IDP program requirements.
As your firm’s point of contact you can assist those interested in this
program by answering questions or helping an intern find a mentor.
How can
you find a mentor?
A number of OC architects have already volunteered to
be mentors and can be contacted through the AIAOC office. You may also choose
an architect you
already
know at your place of work or elsewhere.
