Thomas P. Cox: Architects, Inc. (TCA) is pleased to announce the following promotions and additions to the Irvine-based architecture firm. Steve Hutson, Assoc. AIA has been promoted as an Associate and Director of Quality Assurance. Roger DuPont, AIA comes to TCA as a project manager, and Jim Thornton, Assoc. AIA has joined the firm as a job captain and designer.

Steve Hutson’s responsibilities will include organizing, reviewing and insuring the quality of construction documents, CADD organization and plan reviews. This position requires the ability to interpret, analyze and resolve complex issues while supervising the Q.A. staff and presenting information clearly and concisely. Hutson will improve the Consistency, Accountability and Predictability in the design and construction documentation at TCA by implementing the new “C.A.P” standards to the staff.

Hutson’s project management experience at TCA includes Pinnacle at Talega for BRE Properties, Inc., affordable apartment homes for Jamboree Housing Corporation and two developments for Avalon Bay Communities, Inc.

“We are pleased to promote Steve to this vital position at TCA,” said senior principal Thomas Cox AIA, “The Quality Assurance department is imperative to the success of this firm and Steve is the ideal person to see that our documents are the finest in the industry.”

Hutson worked for seven years with Irvine-based EBTA Architects and he also was employed for ten years at Anthony and Langford Architects in Huntington Beach. He attended California State Polytechnic University of Pomona and Golden West College.

Roger DuPont’s responsibilities include directing and coordinating large-scale mixed-use multifamily projects while bringing a technical sophistication to the firm overall. The project manager position requires extensive experience in multifamily housing; proficiency in client and consultant interaction, highly detailed organizational skills and a thorough understanding of AUTOCAD and other production software.

DuPont received a Bachelors of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and he also studied Urban Design and History at California State University Dominguez Hills. Receiving his architectural license from the state of California in 1985, DuPont has since become a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

DuPont's extensive experience with both "wrap" and "podium" type projects (including the popular "City Lights" community in Aliso Viejo, built by Shea Properties) uniquely qualifies him to spearhead similar efforts at TCA. Projects DuPont will work on include vertically integrated mixed-use urban infill projects with a high-density multi-family component.

Jim Thornton’s responsibilities will include taking projects from schematic design to construction documents while lending his design skills to TCA’s senior housing and multifamily projects. This position requires supervising the production staff, corresponding with consultants, organization of CAD files and a detailed understanding and proficient use of the AUTOCAD computer program.

Thornton’s projects at TCA will consist of high-density multifamily projects, senior housing, and mixed-use developments. His past experience includes assisted living communities, hotels and restaurants. Notably, he helped design the prototype design for the trendy restaurant/music venue the House of Blues.

Thornton’s educational background includes a Bachelors of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic Pomona’s College of Environmental Design along with various structural design graphic workshops.

“We are pleased to bring Jim Thornton on board to TCA’s design team,” said associate Daniel P. Gehman AIA, “He is a multi-talented individual and has the capability to take on an variety of responsibilities - which will benefit the company and create unique opportunities as a designer.”
