Affiliate Profile
Wieland Associates, Inc.
If you want help with a noise issue, you know who to call. Located in Laguna Hills, Wieland Associates, Inc., an acoustical consulting firm, has been conducting noise and vibration studies for commercial, residential, industrial, school, church and library projects for the past six years. The firm has provided assistance to many architectural firms, including Callison Architects, Ware Malcolm and KMA Architecture and Engineering. Wieland Associates also provides noise control recommendations for environmental impact reports and for public works projects such as freeway sound walls, street widening and water treatment facility projects.
As an AIAOC Professional Affiliate, company president Roberta Wieland believes that participation in professional organizations is an essential part of her role. She has been an AIAOC CES presenter (‘Noise Control Issues for Architects’ in 2002), a Sponsor of the AIA-OC Design Lecture Series, and is looking forward to volunteering for the Art and Architecture Tour in June, 2004.
“As a non-architect,” Roberta explains, “I need to understand what’s important to our architect clients. The Design Lecture Series has been very enlightening. The speakers describe the difficulties inherent in their projects, and the parameters within which they had to work. This provides essential insight into how they perceive their task, how they think, and how their contribution benefits society as a whole.”
When Wieland Associates was launched in February 1998, Roberta and her husband, Principal Consultant David Wieland, had already worked together successfully in acoustics for many years. “We started with a client wish-list and a lot of determination. We knew we had our work cut out: to build a reputation as a professional and cost-effective acoustics problem solver, and find ways to get the word out.”
Appearing on the front page of the Orange County Register, and being interviewed on Orange County News television in 1999 regarding the company’s participation in commercial test flight operations at El Toro, provided valuable exposure. Another successful medium Wieland Associates uses to reach clients is its free quarterly newsletter, Sound Advice. Roberta writes and publishes the newsletter, which includes technical input from staff that’s expressed in laypersons’ terms. “We get tremendous feedback about Sound Advice. I try to make it both educational and fun. It’s enormously rewarding to have people call or email us to say how much they enjoy it.”
The Wieland team consists of a tightly-knit core staff of five: Roberta, David, Associate Consultant Jonathan Higginson, Technician Cindy Bordash and Administrative Assistant Danice Limberg. Roberta acknowledges that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. “We’ve been successful because of our terrific staff. We all pull together, understanding what’s needed to stay on track. We respect each other and enjoy working together, and I think that feeling comes across to our clients.”
Now entering its seventh year in business, the firm’s original client wish-list is now largely a reality. Many well-known companies have retained its services: Toyota Motor Corporation, Black and Veatch Corporation, KB Home, HDR, Tetra Tech, Brown and Caldwell, The Irvine Company, Lennar Homes, William Lyon Homes, and Orange County Water and Sanitation Districts, as well as numerous City planning and engineering departments.
