FDA at Irvine, with Dusty Rhoads, AIA, and Rachel Kur, AIA
Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership

Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership in joint venture with Henningson Durham & Richardson, this 133,000-square-foot federal facility was designed to serve the Pacific Region, replacing and consolidating a 50-year-old Los Angeles Laboratory and former District Office in Irvine. Completion of this building marks the culmination of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 10-year strategic plan to improve efficiency and facilitate a changing institutional culture and new work methods. This 100-year-old institution now has a facility to match its vision and forward-looking image, with an environment that will encourage innovation and interaction.

Dusty Rhoads, AIA, Partner

Dusty Rhoads is a design partner with over 20 years of professional experience in architecture, planning, and interior design. For the past 13 years, Dusty has served as the senior designer in ZGF’s Los Angeles office, where he has been responsible for a diverse range of projects on academic, institutional, and corporate campuses. In addition to designing major research facilities for the University of California, Cornell University, the University of Arizona, and Northwestern University, Dusty was also responsible for the design of the FDA at Irvine. His projects clearly reflect his commitment to creating appropriate architecture that balances function with form, meets the goals and aspirations of the users, and provides maximum flexibility for unknown future requirements.

Rachel Kur, AIA

Rachel Kur is a project designer with eight years of professional experience. She earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Arizona, and has traveled extensively throughout Greece, Italy and Mexico City studying architecture. Since joining ZGF, she has played a key role on several projects, including: California Science Center’s World of Ecology; the Thomas W. Keating BioResearch and Medical Research Buildings at the University of Arizona; and BJC’s Missouri Baptist Medical Center renovation and expansion. Before joining ZGF’s Los Angeles Office, Rachel worked for Will Bruder in New River, Arizona, and The Jerde Partnership in Los Angeles.
