BIM in Practice: From Digital As-builts to Contents of the Final BIM Model

Presenters: John Russo, AIA, John Stebbins, Assoc. AIA, Miguel Cuevas, LEED AP

Program Description:

Discover a fast and accurate solution to getting accurate 3D building information into a form that can be used by BIM software tools. Learn how to take the 3D “point cloud” data from a laser scan and transform it into a 3D model that can be used to further the design process for construction documentation to other downstream uses during construction and building operations. See how one of California’s largest architectural firms has implemented BIM on its recent projects.

During the presentations and moderated panel discussion you will learn:

-How a laser scan of an existing building is set up.
-What is a “point cloud” and how is it useful to the BIM process.
-How to take a “Point cloud” and transform it into a useful BIM model.
-What a constructability model contains and how is it useful during construction and building operations.
-How to optimally organize a BIM model.
-Understand the importance of level of detail (LOD) in a BIM model – what to model and what not to model.
-How a large firm approaches implementing BIM into its practice, along with BIM software tools used, how the project teams are set up and lessons learned to date.
