Women in Architecture Committee Present:

Aligning Vision and Reality:

Design Intent in the Field

Sponsored by:

About this Course:

This panel explores the gaps that often arise between design intent, documented existing conditions, and construction execution, and how these disconnects can impact occupant health, life safety, and public welfare. Attendees will gain insight into common causes of coordination failures during documentation and construction administration that may lead to code compliance issues, unsafe site conditions, material failures, or reduced building performance. The discussion will present practical strategies to improve interdisciplinary coordination, reduce risk, and maintain design integrity in the field, supporting safer construction practices and healthier, more durable built environments. Real-world case studies will highlight lessons learned and best practices for aligning design vision with built outcomes to protect the safety and welfare of building occupants and the public.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn about common causes of disconnect between documented existing conditions, design intent, and field execution, and evaluate how these gaps can compromise building safety, code compliance, and occupant welfare.

  • Attendees will learn how documentation clarity, detailing level, and interdisciplinary coordination directly impact constructability, reduce errors, and mitigate risks that affect life safety, building performance, and long-term durability.

  • Attendees will learn to recognize communication breakdowns between design and construction teams and how to implement protocols that safeguard structural integrity, fire/life-safety systems, accessibility, and occupant well-being.

  • Attendees will learn how to apply practical risk-mitigation and quality- control strategies to align design documentation with construction realities in order to reduce safety hazards, liability exposure, and performance failures.
