The Housing Charrette Part 1 last fall, showcased a 4.69-acre site in Irvine, where local architectural firms presented concepts for attainable housing through detailed site plans, elevations, and floor plans. The designs explored strategies to create attainable, high-quality housing while maintaining design excellence and livability. Part 2 shifts to focus on the innovative individual units developed by AIA Orange County emerging professionals. These designs will be crafted to explore the challenges and solutions in creating attainable for sale housing, while exhibiting creative approaches to livability and quality of life. Attendees will engage in a review and discussion of the submitted individual unit concepts, gain insight into the practical considerations and design decisions needed to achieve attainable homeownership in Orange County, while also learning about energy efficient design. Each submission was required to work within a maximum $300,000 purchase price, using the original site as a framework for understanding how AIAOC members continue to address the regions housing affordability crisis through thoughtful, high-quality design solutions.
Teams focused on cost-effective construction techniques, incorporating energy-efficient systems to reduce long-term utility costs, and offering a variety of unit sizes to appeal to different buyers. The proposed solution balanced affordability with quality, ensuring the housing units meet the high standards expected in Orange Countys competitive market. You will be impressed with these designs! Come on out and check out the projects, hear from the designers, get some dinner, earn one AIA HSW Unit, and have some fun too!
