About this Course:

 

This course walks you through the process of designing buildings to have accessible doors, gates, and door hardware. Information based on ANSI A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities Standard Chapter 4 and California Building Standards Code Title 24 Part 2 Chapters 11 A and 11B. Designed for those who are designing and drawing buildings to meet accessibility requirements

Learning Objectives:



During this program, participants will learn:

  • Learn the origin of the ADA Americans with Disabilities Act and the history of inclusion of accessibility in the California Building Code(CBC).
  • Understand ANSI A117.1, the standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities and CBC Chapters 11A and 11B and the sections that affect door hardware.
  • See how Accessible Routes and Maneuvering Clearances are an integral part of providing accessibility.  To use the code charts and descriptions to help design accessible buildings.
  • Learn how doors and door hardware components affect openings accessibility. Identify differences in accessible openings vs openings that do not meet accessibility requirements. How the differences between CBC and ANSI A117.1 affect opening design, door and hardware selection.

Valarie Harris FCSI, CDT, CCPR, Principal Consultant at Consult Valarie LLC. She has 37 years’ experience in door hardware consulting with expertise in how door hardware impacts and effects accessibility. She has worked at major manufacturers ASSA ABLOY, dormakaba, and Stanley Black and Decker.  Experienced with dozens of types of doors and hardware brands. Familiar with a wide range of projects including HCAI/OSHPD and DSA. Projects have included hospitals, behavioral healthcare, K-12 schools, colleges and universities, commercial, manufacturing, industrial, and multi-family projects.
