Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD) Utilizing Precast Concrete Environmental Tools and Methods

The precast concrete industry has committed considerable efforts to model and measure embodied carbon generated by the fabrication of its products. Precast concrete products are unique in their fabrication and differ from other construction materials when tracking environmental impacts. Precast concrete products are also unique in the measuring and predicting the global warming potential (GWP) from the A1-A3 phases (“cradle-to-gate”) of the product life cycle.

This course will:

1) describe the methodology of environmental modeling and development of environmental product declarations (EPDs),

2) explore how initial data collections show variation in results on a regional basis,

3) understand what tools precast concrete producers have to provide EPDs to design professionals and track progress on GWP reduction for the “cradle-to-gate” of the product life cycle, and

4) discuss how using this information can help to achieve zero net carbon design projects.
