The UCI Medical Center—comprising a Hospital, Ambulatory Care Center, Central Plant, and parking structure—is the first all-electric hospital in the nation. While delivering the innovative clinical programs required of a prestigious academic medical, teaching, and research institution, the project seamlessly integrates an optimized patient experience with advanced energy efficiency, solar control, and carbon-free building operations.
The UCI Medical Center leverages its unique adjacency to natural wetlands to create a healthy and restorative outdoor environment for patients and staff. The integrated inpatient and outpatient facilities represent a paradigm shift in clinical operations, enabling more efficient workflows and leading-edge patient care. The design-build team—Hensel Phelps and CO Architects—working collaboratively with their client, UCI, explored innovative strategies to cost-effectively implement specialty clinical programs while achieving carbon-free, energy-efficient operations.
