ADA – Disability Access

This course will provide examples of differences between the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA, the California Building Code (CBC), and the laws that surround them and how they impact design.

A certified access specialist will present an overview of the Certified Access Specialist program (CASp) as well as examples of how to start thinking about accessibility within project compliance.

Learning Objectives:


  • Attendees will learn there are differences between regulations, and the most stringent must be followed when designing to provide accessibility.


  • Using examples, attendees will review and examine which accessibility codes and regulations may impact projects, and how to meet compliance to provide safe, accessible environments for people with disabilities. 


  • Attendees will learn how to respond to an accessibility claim impacting their projects and learn how to use their insurance in the event of an accessibility claim.


  • Attendees will review how the CASp program benefits the health and safety of its occupants.

Presenters:

Michelle R. Generaux received her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame (BA, 1993) and law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law (JD, 1996), and her practice focuses on the representation of privately held businesses, with an emphasis on architectural and engineering firms. She has extensive experience in entity selection and formation, contract drafting and negotiation, ownership transitions and mergers and acquisitions. She also practices in the areas of probate and trust administration.

 

 

 

Afshan Afshar is an architect, CASp certified, 2010 AIA  Orange County Chapter President, and a known presence in the OC community for her expertise in construction-related accessibility requirements of ADA and CBC. She has extensive experience in commercial, public, and government  project types in multiple market sectors, including but not limited to higher education, hospitality, corporate and Civic.  Afshan has been invited to provide numerous training  seminars through the AIA Orange County chapter.
