The AIDS Monument is a collaboration between the City of West Hollywood and the Foundation for the AIDS Monument (FAM) to memorialize the devastation of HIV/AIDS, honor courageous activists, caregivers, and community leaders through their STORIES, and raise awareness about the history and stigma of living with HIV/AIDS.

Designed by artist Daniel Tobin with architectural drawings and construction services provided by LPA Design Studios, the AIDS Monument features a plaza, a donor wall, vertical bronze “traces” with narrative text and integrated lighting reminiscent of a candlelight vigil, and a podium facing N. San Vicente Boulevard. Set in the heart of West Hollywood and opening in 2026, Stories - The AIDS Monument captures the West Hollywood community’s activism and the personal stories of those impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will gain insight into the materials selected for the monument, exploring why they were chosen, their selection based on carbon neutrality, how they perform in a public environment, and the symbolic meaning they convey.
  • Attendees will explore the role of light as an integral design element, learning how illumination enhances the monument’s visibility, fosters a sense of reverence, and establishes the site as a space for contemplation and reflection to heal the soul. Throughout the tour, participants will see how materiality and lighting work together to reinforce the monument’s purpose and emotional resonance as a place of healing.
  • Attendees will gain insight into how accessibility is thoughtfully woven throughout the monument and West Hollywood Park, creating an inclusive place that is accessible to all.
  • Attendees will learn about the project team’s journey—from the artist and architect’s collaboration with the community, the importance of accessibility for all who visit the memorial, to the monument’s final realization to create a place of remembrance, contemplation, and healing.
